What is MICROCON?

MICROCON, or ‘A Micro Level Analysis of Violent Conflict’ is a five-year research programme funded by the European Commission, which takes an innovative micro level, multidisciplinary approach to the study of the conflict cycle. Almost one third of the world's population lives in conflict-affected low-income countries.

At a fundamental level, conflict originates from people’s behaviour and how they interact with society and their environment - from its ‘micro' foundations. Yet most conflict research and policy focuses on ‘macro' perspectives. MICROCON seeks to redress this balance.

What is MICROCON trying to achieve?

MICROCON aims to promote understanding of individual and group interactions leading to and resulting from violent mass conflicts. Understanding these fundamentals will lead to better informed domestic, regional and international conflict policy, which places individuals and groups at the centre of interventions.

When did MICROCON start?

MICROCON started work on 1st January 2007, and was officially launched in March 2007 at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, United Kingdom. The programme is due to run until the end of 2011.

Who is involved in the MICROCON Consortium?

The MICROCON Consortium comprises 24 research organisations from around the world. View the full list of partners and researchers.

How is MICROCON funded?

MICROCON is mainly funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme Priority Seven: Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society. Our individual research projects are often co-funded by other donors.
